S2 (military)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the modern United States Army and several other militaries with similar structures, the S2 is the principal staff officer for all matters concerning military intelligence (MI), counterintelligence, security operations, and military intelligence training at the brigade level and lower. At higher-level headquarters, this function is carried out by an officer called the "G2." On joint staffs, the intelligence officer is called the "J2" and recently the Air Force has replaced the intelligence function office symbol "IN" with "A2" at numbered air force level and higher.
The S2 is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating information about the enemy and the area of interest. The S2 also prepares the collection plan designed to support the staff-developed decision-support template. The battalion commander has specific information needs relating to the unit's area of operations and specific tactical interests. The two critical categories of information available to both the battalion and brigade commander are intelligence and combat information.
