S1 (military)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the modern United States Army and several other militaries with similar structures, the S1 is the personnel and administration officer at brigade level and lower. The role has two parts:

  • the functional role of the S1 consists of supervising and coordinating the unit's personnel and administration systems;
  • in addition, he/she is also entrusted with the traditional role of the adjutant, serving the commanding officer across a wide range of activities.

The S1 is the essential administrative liaison between companies, the battalion and the brigade. He/she handles personnel actions which flow from the companies to brigade or the military personnel office. Additionally, the S1 performs the personnel functions of special staff officers at higher levels, e.g., PAO.

The personnel/administration function at division level and higher is referred to as "G1," and at joint commands as "J1."
