[edit] Premise
Set several years after "The Great Uprising", a future geological phenomenon near Tokyo, some people have developed a power granting them the ability to deconstruct, reshape, and crystalize matter at a molecular level using only thought and willpower. These people have come to be known as "Alter users", and with only 1% of the newborn generations receiving such special power (though later in the series it is stated that the number has increased to 5% and steadily continuing to rise), some feel a superiority over normal humans.
Naturally, there are two opposing forces of alters: the Native Alters, a group of Alter users who live outside the central city and avoid any relationships with the government; and HOLY, an organization of Alter users that are a subgroup of an organization called HOLD. HOLD functions as the Mainland government's super police force of the Lost Ground, while HOLY, composed exclusively of Alter users, serves as the 'special operations' group, aiding HOLD in performing dangerous missions that might require the help of an Alter user.
Kazuma (dubbed "The Treasoner" in the manga and "The Shell Bullet" in the anime) and Ryuhou are the two Scryed characters bearing a rivalry used to drive and focus the plot. They spend much of the series trying to defeat each other, even when they are forced to work together. Neither can forget their bitter rivalry.
There is also a narrator, Kanami. Kanami is a friend of Kazuma's whom Kazuma protects. She narrates the series with her dreams, unknowingly using her alter power to 'scry' the emotions of the people she feels closely about. Her ability to peer into the emotions of the main characters is used frequently through-out the series to bring insight to the characters, and to tease viewers during previews for the next episode.
The series progresses through the initial introduction of the Alter power to a wider reaching understanding of the politics and reason for "The Great Uprising". Each episode showcases a new alter user, and their alter, or a growth of the Alter of a previously introduced character. "The Great Uprising" is later revealed to be caused by a similar event in a parallel universe where all creatures are independent thinking Alters. During one of Ryuhou and Kazuma's many battles, they open a gateway to the parallel universe, causing another uprising and attracting the attention of the Mainland government. The Mainland sends its agent, Kyouji Mujo, to the Lost Ground in an attempt to exploit the power of the parallel universe for economic gain. Mujo develops delusions of grandeur after becoming the defacto head of the Lost Ground government and absorbing the crystal entity from "the other side" to add to his already formidable Alter power. However, both he and the crystal entity are defeated by the separate efforts of Kazuma and Ryuhou, respectively. The Mainland once again attempts to exert control over the Lost Ground by sending in a fleet of refined Alter users under their control, but they are defeated by Kazuma and Ryuhou.
It is also worth noting that the concept of an "alter" bears a striking resemblance to the "stands" present in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure; both are manifestations of some personal energy that give the user extraordinary abilities and manifest as a variety of objects, and each individual has a different power that they draw upon their abilities to bestow upon them. However, while the stands in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure often take the form of a human or humanoid entity, alters rarely resemble human beings; the most notable exceptions being Sou Kigetsuki's three female alter creations (which are just pieces of his real alter), Ryuhou's Zetsuei, and The Crystal, which in fact bears quite a striking resemblance in appearance to stand of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure hero Jotaro Kujo, Star Platinum.
Starting in 2003, Bandai began releasing the show in North America as six individual Region 1 volumes, followed by a complete 6-disc box set in November 2004. Later, the series premiered on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block on May 28, 2005, after select episodes had been aired on Adult Swim's Video On Demand service for nearly a year. On October 24, 2006 a more affordable Anime Legends complete collection box set will be released.

[edit] Opening/Ending theme progression
Depending on the episodes, the openings are either "Kazuma" or "Ryuho" oriented. Furthermore, the Kazuma opening plays the 1st verse of "Reckless Fire," while the Ryuho opening plays the 2nd verse. Also, as the story progresses, details of the opening change to reflect plot developments or showcase new characters. Characters who are killed off also have their parts in the opening changed. After Scheris Adjani's death, her scene in the intro retains the same animation but is now in black and white, and the picture becomes fuzzier as the scene progresses, like a degrading piece of film. After the Crystal's "death", his scene in the intro is cut out completely (except for episode 26) and replaced with nothing-just an empty black screen. When Kimishima dies mid-series, his scene in the intro (which showed him driving around in his jeep) is replaced with a brief sepia toned montage of memorable scenes featuring him.
Another noticeable opening is episode 26 (the series finale.) It is completely different from that of episodes 1-25. It's a recap of the events of the series, and for the most part, those characters who have died have sequences in black and white. It uses the usual ending theme ("Drastic My Soul") instead of the usual intro song ("Reckless Fire.") Also it does not include the series' title-the Scryed logo does not appear in episode 26 until the very last frame.
The opposite of this is the ending, which remains the same throughout the series. However, a brief still picture featuring one of the characters (usually a new one introduced that episode, where applicable) plays after the next episode preview. These stills were originally used for sponsor announcements, but are retained (without announcer or sponsor logos) in the DVD release.
In the opening of episodes 2, 6, 13, 15, & 25, the third form of Ryuhou's alter is seen for a few seconds.
[edit] Characters
Characters of s-CRY-ed |
Inners | HOLY Members | Other |
Names are in Western order, with the given name before the surname.
- Kazuma
- Age 16, Kazuma is the main character that the story follows. At first, Kazuma is portrayed as a reckless Alter User who will do anything for money. Those around him don't know he is an Alter User, and believe that he's simply avoiding his work when he runs off for Kimishima's "jobs". Kazuma has a temper, but it's shown he also deeply cares about his friends, putting his life on the line whenever they are in danger. Originally, Kazuma was classified as a "Class C" Alter User, but this was soon changed to "Class A" after defeating Tachibana.
- Kazuma has a powerful Alter called Shell Bullet, a harmonizing type Alter. At its first level, Shell Bullet covers Kazuma's right arm with protective metal armor, and also creates three curved fins of metal jutting out from his right shoulder blade, each progressively larger as they near his shoulder. When attacking, Kazuma can cause one of the three fins to disintegrate, propelling him forward at a great speed to increase his power with attacks named "Shocking First Bullet" (衝撃のファースト・ブリット Shougeki no First Bullet?, lit. "Shockwave's First Bullet"), "Annihilating Second Bullet" (撃滅のセカンド・ブリット Gekimetsu no Second Bullet?, lit. "Destruction's Second Bullet") and "Exterminating Last Bullet" (抹殺のラスト・ブリット Massatsu no Last Bullet?, lit. "Obliteration's Last Bullet"). Later, it is shown that that Straight Cougar was the one who developed these "Bullet" attacks.
- After Episode 13, Kazuma stops using this form of his alter until the final episode. Kazuma becomes one of the only alter users to 'self-evolve' his ability after a confrontation with the Crystallized Form. In his second form (known outside as Shell Bullet Ultimate), the fins are replaced with one giant, curved propeller which grants him the ability to fly at great speeds, his arm's armor is thicker and completely replaces his arm, not just covering it, and three fins of metal jut out of his face near his right eye (which is shown to be injured after Kazuma's next fight with Ryuhou). The attack, "Shell Bullet Burst" is powerful and, unlike the first form, has infinite use; however, it puts a strain on Kazuma. Also, it can regenerate when it's cut off and reattaches to Kazuma.
- Near the end of the series, Kazuma becomes one of only three Alter Users to reach the third stage of an Alter. In this form, his entire body is encased in his Alter's alloy, causing him to appear like a humanoid cross between a samurai and a lion, and boosting the power of his punches to incredible levels. His propeller becomes a whip that he uses to shoot into the air and he is able to use super-sized shell bullets using both arms. This final form is achieved through his intense rage toward Kyouji Mujo along with the power he gained from the other side.
- When Kazuma returns into his normal human form after using his alter power, he bears scars or bodily alterations that resemble a part of his previous alter level's form. After returning from his second-level alter, Kazuma's right arm has black lines across it in the same places that his arm used to split when he activated his first-level alter. Kazuma's right eye is almost always closed after he uses this form of his alter too much, opening only when his alter is activated. This is speculated to be because his eye has become part of his alter itself - in addition, his right eye appears to have changed color towards the end of the series, from its original reddish to an orange the same color as the fins on his face, further supporting this theory. After returning from his final form, the hair above the right side of his forehead is colored the same orange color as the armor from his second alter.
- Kazuma's attack in his final form is "Proud Fist". In contrast, Kazuma only has two forms of his alter in the manga. The final form in the manga is called "Death Bullet." Also, in the manga he is known as Kazuma the Treasoner. This is because of how he rebels against the weak thoughts in his brain, a technique called "mental treason." In the anime, he's known as Kazuma the Shell Bullet. His lack of a surname in both versions is symbolic of how he has no ties to society.
- In the last two episodes of the season finale, both he and his rival Ryuhou vow to defend the inners from the main land with their alter powers. He first appears in Episode 1.
- Kanami Yuta
- Age 8, Kanami is a young girl who lives with Kazuma. Kanami knows nothing about Kazuma's alter ability or his missions. All she knows is that Kazuma is getting paid for whatever he is doing, though sometimes the pay isn't enough to support the two of them. To supplement their income, she often works at a local farm. She often calls Kazuma "Kazu-kun", which he hates very much. Her personality is kind and determined but at the same time, when Kazuma messes up, she gives him one of those "I am very disappointed" speeches, without raising her voice, to make Kazuma feel like an idiot.
- She often has "dreams" about a strange man and the different battles he fights in. This man turns out to be Kazuma. It is revealed later in the series that Kanami has an unnamed alter power that gives her empathic and telepathic abilities, which allows her to read other's thoughts and emotions (known as scrying). At the end of the series, she is living with some other inners including Mimori Kiryu, both hoping that one day Kazuma and Ryuhou will return back them. She first appears in Episode 1.
- Ryuhou
- Age 17, Ryuhou (romanized as Ryuhou in the English manga and Ryuho in the English anime) Tairen is widely regarded as the strongest HOLY member. Ryuhou develops a strong rivalry with Kazuma, the only native alter on Lost Ground to escape HOLY, continuously foil HOLY's plans afterwards, and fight Ryuhou one-on-one without being defeated instantly. Ryuhou is extremely strict, refuses to talk about his mother, and does his job without any distractions. Known by Mimori Kiryu, Ryuhou's personality has changed in a full circle to a new person.
- Driven by his motivation to find the alter that killed his mother during the Great Uprising, Ryuhou uses his alter ability 'Zetsuei,' a humanoid alter that possesses flexible ribbons which can reach out and attack Ryuhou's enemies from afar and to defend against their attacks. He can also upgrade Zetsuei to a more powerful form (True Zetsuei), with the body of a snake from the waist down, that can move at even greater speeds. This form also has two rockets for arms (his Vigorous Left fist Garyuu and Vigorous Right fist Fukuryuu), which can be fired off to explode, cut through other objects, or both. Other components of Zetsuei exist but are not often used: for example, on occasion, Ryuhou uses a Tender Fist Raitsujin (also called Resshin in Episode 13), apparently a coiling hidden weapon arm and can use the claws on Zetsuei's tail as a buzz saw. Zetsuei aids Ryuhou in hunting down native alters.
- Like Kazuma, Ryuhou also self evolves and reaches the highest alter state by using Zetsuei's most powerful form as armor (Called Zetsuei Touryudan in the manga), allowing Ryuhou to fly, use great speed, and even slice through obstacles using the many sleek edges on his armor. He can even take the armor off to form two giant blades or one giant sword/shield. When he used his Final Alter for the first time, he ended up having two scars on his face when he's in his normal form.
- Ryuho, like Kazuma, also appears to manifest some part of his alter in his normal human form, as in the final episode of 's-CRY-ed', he is seen with lines, though subtle, are apparent remenants of the facial helmet-part to his alter, it is believed he received this from using his alter more than once, like Kazuma's hair and eye changing along with his alter.
- In the last two episodes of the season finale, both he and his rival Kazuma vow to defend the inners from the main land with their alter powers. He first appears in episode 1.
- Kunihiko Kimishima
- Age 17, Kimishima is Kazuma's friend and supporter. Kimishima is a business man, often using his connections to get valuable information. He met Kazuma by those connections. Although he has no alter powers, he is often willing to put himself in dangerous situations, such as defending the Lost Ground from a HOLY crackdown. A running joke of the series is that every vehicle he gets his hands on is either unitentionally destroyed by Kazuma's actions or destroyed by another Alter User. He has a crush on Ayase Terada. In the anime, he is severely injured and later dies from wounds inflicted during a conflict with HOLY, namely Darth, something which drives Kazuma virtually insane with anger and grief. In the manga, he's alive and well, now married to Ayase Terada. He first appears in Episode 1.
- Mimori Kiryu
- Age 18, Mimori Kiryu is the daughter of Tadanori Kiryu, the Mainland's top advisor for the Lost Ground. Her family funds HOLD and HOLY, and as such she is treated like a princess. She was born in the Lost Ground and moved away, but comes back seven years later at the start of the anime to be with Ryuhou. She met him during a childhood party and discovered his odd powers; saying she thought of them as a blessing. She works at HOLY as a scientist. An old flame of Ryuhou's, she hopes to reunite with him. She's also extremely idealistic and gentle, helping virtually all of the other cast members at some point or other. She first appears in Episode 1.
- Scheris Adjani
- Age 15, Scheris Adjani is a former native alter who was rescued from gang members by Ryuhou in a HOLY raid as a child. She joined HOLY shortly after. When first introduced it is obvious that she is a light-hearted and friendly girl. She has a strong crush on Ryuhou, and will follow him to no end. When Mimori Kiryu makes her presence known, Scheris begins to express a certain amount of jealously when she suspects that Mimori and Ryuhou are more than friends. After a period of this, she loses hope and allows Mimori to make her stand. Scheris is very energetic in most situations.
- Scheris' alter ability is "Eternal Devote," which allows her to heal others and bolster their abilities, as well as inflict severe pain through physical contact and even resurrect a fallen comrade. Her alter is difficult to control and saps her of physical strength. But although it was labeled forbidden to use, Scheris dies using her full alter power to revive a fallen Ryuhou near the end of the series in the episode bearing her name (When she used her alter then it manifested itself as an independent alter). After she disappears, Ryuhou cries out for her after Kazuma lectures him on her death and convinces him to say something for her (sort of like a funeral), giving her the acknowledgement she had been striving for so long. In the manga, she uses her alter to combine with Ryuhou temporarily, allowing him to use the Zetsui Toryudan. She first appears in Episode 1.
- Martin Zigmarl
- Martin Zigmarl is the Commander of HOLY. He is an American immigrant to Japan, and one of the first and oldest known Alter users. He was the first to be refined. His alter power is not shown until late in the series and is called "Alter Alias." This alter consists of two parts: An armor that protects sections of his body, and a stand-alone mecha that moves independently but under control from Zigmarl much like Ryuhou and his Zetsuei. Using the body armor and mecha, Zigmarl can create nearly unstoppable shockwaves of compressed air. Later on, he dies after a pitched battle with Ryuhou in which it is revealed that his alter power causes him to age very rapidly. In the manga, his face is only a front; his real face is of a young man. He dies of premature aging. In the anime, he's somewhat of a stern figure and a father figure to Ryuhou. However, in the manga, his personality is similar to Kyouji Mujo. He first appears in Episode 1.
- Note: In Episode 21 ("Holy Eye"), a computer terminal shows Martin spelling his name as "Martin Sigmar".
- Straight Cougar
- Straight Cougar, age 21 (first appearing in Episode 2), is a laid back member of HOLY, and does not seem to think twice about breaking the rules. His philosophy on life: the faster you do one thing, the more time you have for the next thing. He is usually found carrying around a book he never seems to have time to finish. He has problems remembering names, especially Mimori Kiryu's and Kazuma's (tending to call Kazuma "Kazuya" and Mimori "Minori"). In the anime version, Cougar holds romantic feelings for Mimori. He also knew Kazuma as a child and was the originator of the Bullet moves (Shocking First Bullet and so on), that Kazuma originally used, only he calls the last bullet Rapid-Kill Final Bullet instead of Exterminating Last Bullet. He and Kazuma had a brotherly relationship. Although they often refer to each other as brothers, there is no concrete information to show that they are actually related. In the manga, he is known as Cougar Straight, and was Kazuma's mentor, which is why they both have near-identical attacks like "Shocking First Bullet".
- Straight Cougar is the fastest alter user on the planet and isn't afraid to show it. Using his alter, 'Radical Good Speed', he can transform any vehicle into a fast moving object, 'shrinking the world' by doing things as fast as possible. He can also increase his speed alone without any vehicle by encasing armor to his shins and feet (Radical Good Speed Wheels Unlimited). He is one of the most powerful alter users, capable of high-speed fighting, and can even use his alter power to upgrade his armor to completely cover his body as well. He too has seen the Alter Dimension since he was a Native Alter who had been refined (due to this, his lifespan was apparently shortened, hence his philosophy on doing things fast so he will not miss out on life).
- Cougar was thought to be fatally injured in a fight with Kyouji Mujo, but appears afterwards in order to rescue all of the secondary characters left in HOLY HQ. He seems to die in episode 26, when he is seen sitting on a lounge chair reading his book, thinking about what Kazuma and Ryuhou should do with their lives instead of fighting (i.e. spend time with their loved ones: Kanami and Mimori). His thoughts then begin to slow down and he lays still in a lounge chair. It is still debated if he died or if he merely fell asleep. However, in the manga, he fights with Kazuma and is fatally wounded, but is executed by Urizane's alter power for treason.
- Asuka Tachibana
- Age 16, Asuka Tachibana is a member of HOLY who possesses the alter power of the 'Eternity Eight.' Tachibana has a sweet demeanor when he's not fighting, but when conflict arises he becomes stern and professional. Early in the series, a bitter but unrequited rivalry with Kazuma rises after he is embarrassed by Kazuma during his escape from HOLD headquarters. Later in the series, Tachibana befriends Kazuma after being trapped in an underground cave, and is given new insight into the ideals of the native alters from Kazuma. He then decides to leave HOLY behind and disappears to adjust to his new found life as a broker, helping merge the ghetto and metropolis. He later helps Mimori and the others. He had a fiancé named Cammy, but left her behind when he disappeared from HOLY. He claims that he never really loved her, but she appears before him in episode 25 and they start to live together.
- Asuka's alter, Eternity Eight, consists of eight small emerald orbs that act as an extension of his will, proving to be one of the most versatile alters in the series. These orbs allow him to control minds (although some alter users can resist this effect by force of will), form a shield or a sword, heal himself or others, or fly at great speeds. He can also use them to manifest a bow to fire his Eternity Eight as an arrow, calling it the "Eternity Extra Shot". He first appeared in Episode 3
- Elian Zigmarl
- Elian is the cloned son of Martin Zigmarl. Elian's alter allows him to create and control electronic devices that allow him to observe large areas anywhere or spy on anyone. His alter is known as "Absolute Perception". Mujo uses twin clones of Martin Zigmarl, which apparently at a younger state hold the appearance of Elian, to control the mass areas of the HOLY HQ after it is reformed. Elian formed a watermelon farm with Urizane at the end of the series. He first appears in Episode 6. Elian doesn't appear in the manga.
- Urizane
- Urizane is a HOLY member who really likes watermelons and hates when people try to take them. His physical appearance is that of a fat, balding teenager. While he may seem like a gluttonous freak at first, he is revealed to be a good man. He might have a crush on Scheris Adjani. Urizane's alter ability allows him to use watermelons as bombs, shields, platforms, and even teleportation devices. At the end of the series, he makes a watermelon farm with Elian's help, although he alters it in order to help Elian broadcast Kazuma and Ryuhou's fight all over the Lost Ground. In the manga, he's a maniac and commits suicide after executing Cougar. He first appeared in Episode 2.
- Kyouji Mujo
- Kyouji Mujo is the primary villain of the series, whose alter ability is "Absorption." Mujo can steal another's power and copy their abilities to use as his own. He even accommodates "the crystal" as his alter to use for his own gain. He seems driven by an unending sense of hunger and self-superiority. He gets sent into the Alter Dimension and comes back more powerful than ever in the form of a grotesque monster with at least 22 arms which is an accumulation of all the negativity in the world. Kazuma destroys Mujo once and for all in his final Alter form. He first appeared in Episode 12. He's an exclusive character to the anime, although strangely he appears in the manga as part of a large group shot near the very end.
- The Crystal
- This is the alter that killed Ryuhou's mother. It is not an alter user but more of a concentration of alter power. It left the Alter dimension through the "door to the other side" that was left open following the Great Uprising. However, due to the lack of a steady supply of energy it effectively "suffocated" and sought out Ryuhou because of his potential power. It is absorbed by Kyouji Mujo and is used by him to fight Ryuhou, and it is destroyed by Ryuhou's final alter form. It has a white left arm, referred to by Mujo as "White Trick," and a black right arm dubbed "Black Joker," a yellow orb on its forehead, a red orb in its left chest, and a blue orb for a buckle at its waist. It can control lightning and fire it off in the form of dark orbs that surge with electricity. This alter is independent and dangerous, and capable of great speed and power. It looks exactly like Galan Du, the villain in the manga except it has pupils and can talk human speech rather than grunt like a whale; he's Martin Zigmarl's "Alter" in the manga. He first appears in Episode 3.
- Sou Kigetsuki
- Kigetsuki is a HOLY member that loves women that he believes are attractive. Kigetsuki spent his life in training of his three "puppets" which are known as the Three Tokonatsu Sisters (Banka, Chuka and Shoka). The Tokonatsu sisters are the alter power of Kigetsuki, and they all can fuse together to form a monster known as Burning Summer, which has power over heat and fire. Kigetsuki primarily uses his dolls to attract men in certain types of ways deceitfully. This technique is mainly combined with Unkei's alter power. Kigetsuki later joins under Kyouji Mujo due to the fact that he believes that Mujo will attain a greater level of standing than that of Commander Zigmarl. Kigetsuki ends up being killed by Mujo for unknown reasons following the end of episode 19.
- Unkei
- Unkei is a HOLY member that specializes in playwright abilities. Unkei has an alter power that allows him to read the inner depths of emotions in one's mind and spirit. Through this, Unkei can make what he believes are the greatest works of literature known to man. Unkei's alter power especially works through Kigetsuki's alter power, since that Kigetsuki can amend the workings of the opponent's mind with his doll trio, while Unkei has the chance to create the greatest of scripts. Unkei ends up being killed by Ryuhou following episode 16 because Ryuhou becomes mad after learning of Zigmarl's deception.
[edit] Common Terms
- Alter - A power organisms can achieve and use to manipulate molecular reality in some way. The ability to use alter power can be present from birth or attained after one has seen "the other side". The form alter power takes differs between different organisms and can be upgraded through training and experience to the highest form of shining light and armor. An alter can come in the form of an independent body such as Ryuhou's Zetsuei, an element such as water or blizzard, harmonious armor such as Kazuma's right arm, an intangible power such as telepathy, or a weapon such as Asuka's Eternity Eight. However, matter must be processed in order to use the energy or resources to crystallize or create the alter. The alter user can control what matter will be used to attain the alter.
- The Light - Reference to the other world of alters, a place bathed in psychedelic light. One can achieve the light when encountering "the Crystal."
- Refinement - Some alters have been sent to the mainland to have their alter powers processed, allowing them to display differences in their powers and most likely become Darths.
- s-CRY-ed - Although not mentioned in the anime, in the manga, it's the "word of evolution" used to achieve an Alter's final form (the armored form) where Alters and their Users can fuse together to become an even more powerful being. In the anime, Ryuho and Kazuma are the only characters to achieve this form. Some would argue that Zigmar and Cougar also achieved this, but in their cases, they were both refined and that their Alters can take different shapes rather than upgrade themselves like Ryuho and Kazuma did using their own wills to achieve it. The word itself is only used as a catalyst in the manga.
