Sétif was established by French colonists on the ruins of the first century Roman town Sitifis. Sitifis was founded by the Romans as a colony for veterans. As the town grew, around 297 A.D, the province of Mauretania Sitifensis is established, with Sitifis as the central city. From this point on until the 19th century when the French occupied the area, almost no historical information can be found on the city. In 1838, a French garrison, or military post is established here.In 1945, a local rebellion against the French, resulted in the massacre of forty thousand Algerians. It is now known as the Setif massacre.

[edit] Sétif massacre

Main article: Sétif massacre

On May 9, 1945, one day after the formal end of World War II in Europe, an uprising against the occupying French forces in Sétif and the nearby towns Guelma and Kherrata resulted in the deaths of ninety or more pied-noirs. The uprising was suppressed through what is now known as the Sétif massacre, during which the United States American consul in Algiers estimated that at least forty thousand Algerians lost their lives.

Djemila is situated in the region bordering the Constantinois and Small Kabylie. This is an exceptional antique site in Algeria which inherited significant historic value. The Roman ruins, particularly well preserved, organize themselves around the forum of the Harsh, a large paved square of which the entry is marked by a majestic arch. Under the name of Cuicul, the city was built during the first century A.D. The city was initially resided by a colony of soldiers, and eventually grew to become a large trading market. The resources that contributed to the prosperity of the city were essentially agricultural (cereals, olive trees and farm). The city was slowly abandoned after the fall of the Roman Empire around the V and VI century. The Muslims later dominated the region but did not reoccupy the site of Cuicul, that they renamed under the name of Djemila, meaning "beautiful" in Arabic.

[edit] Climate

The fact that Setif is located on the High Plateaus at an elevation of 1,096 metres, makes Setif one of the coldest areas in Algeria. The Wilaya or province of Setif endures some of the coldest weather in Algeria where it can snow up to 40 cms. Flash floods are rare but have recently occurred around the spring and fall seasons. The summer is fairly hot where extreme heat waves are common around the month of July where temperatures can sometimes even reach 40°C.
