São Thomé das Letras has a large number of waterfalls, natural jungle (known as "Mata Atlântica") and cave systems.

One of the major attractions of the city is the Gruta do Carimbado (Carimbado Grotto), a deep cave that no one knows were it ends (speculating that the cave have underground connections with a similar cave in Macchu Picchu). São Thomé das Letras is also known as a home city for a large number of 70's hippies, counterculture members and leather and stone artisans, producing a flourishing cultural and night life.
