São Gonçalo (Funchal)

São Gonçalo is a parish in the district of and a suburb of Funchal in the Madeira Islands. The population in 2001 is 7,232, its density is 1,021.5/km² and the area is 7.08 km². It is located on a road linking Funchal and Machico with another road connecting to Porto da Cruz. The main industry are businesses. It is connected with a road linking. The Atlantic Ocean is to the south. The mountains are to the northeast. Farmlands used to dominate the area. The urban sprawl of Funchal transformed much of the land into urban or residential areas. The forests are along the valley. Downtown funchal is to the west and the escarpment is near to the east. The settlement of Sao João de Latrão lies to the north.
