São Filipe (Portuguese for "Saint Philip"), or San Filipe in the Djarfogo Capeverdean Crioulo, is the capital of the island of Fogo in the Sotavento archipelago of Cape Verde. São Filipe was the third largest city in Cape Verde, after that it is now the fifth largest city in Cape Verde. São Filipe is linked with a road that encircles the whole island but not fully paved. São Filipe is located SW of Mosteiros and in the southwestern part of the island. It is known for its black sand beach, abundant gardens, trees, flowers, flora and its historic architecture and is also home to the island's airport located in the south, a port to the north and to a prison. The island offers a view of the neighboring island of Brava to the southwest. It is home to Cape Verde's tallest mountain named Mount Fogo and Chã das Caldeiras west of the mountaintop. Many villages are in the western and the southern parts and most of the island's fertile areas lies in this area because it is less slopey. Its main industry are agriculture followed by tourism and other industries in small numbers. The population are made up of rural and some urban. The living standards are low in the rural areas which are mainly have no household items outside the town especially electricity. It is one of the least developed, the literacy rate is almost high.

The municipality until 1991 formerly constituted the whole island of Fogo and was known by the island name (Old ISO 3166-2 code: CV-FO) before Mosteiros broke up. In 2005, the municipality of Santa Catarina do Fogo located in the east returned to São Filipe after a restructuring plan since most of these only contain one parish each.
