Rykkinn

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rykkinn is a dormitory town in the north-west of Bærum with about 10 000-15 000 inhabitants. It consists mainly of apartment blocks and smaller houses. Most of Rykkinn's buildings and infrastructure were built in the late 1960's due to the growing demands for housing near Oslo. The mix of houses and apartments can therefor be seen as a part of the social democratic ideology that heavely influenced Norwegian society at that time: People of different classes would live peacefully side by side in the new suburb.

Rykkinn also has a shopping mall with a bingo and two landmarks known as "le-skur". These are small sheds placed outside Rykkinn Skole, div. Berger for the youths off Rykkinn to hang out in. Rykkinn used to be notorious for drug problems and robberies. The situation has, however, improved. Rykkinn is home to the Norwegian national basketball venue, and they also have a basketball team in the Top series of Norwegian basketball called Bærums Verk Jets.

Harald Eia, a Norwegian comedian who have often included references to Rykkinn in his performances, and Nikolaj Frobenius, an author and screenwriter, were born here. Frobenius' book "Teori og Praksis" caused much controversy because of its criticism of Rykkinn and he has later faced negative articles in the local paper "Asker og Bærum Budstikke"
