Ryan Middle School (Houston)

James D. Ryan Middle School is a secondary school located in Houston, Texas.

Ryan, which serves grades 6 through 8, is a part of the Houston Independent School District.

Ryan Middle School serves much of the Third Ward area and a very small portion of Midtown Houston.

Cuney Homes and Ewing Apartments, two separate units of public housing, are zoned to Ryan.

After Yates High School relocated from 2610 Elgin to 3703 Sampson in 1958, Ryan Colored Junior High School opened in Yates' former location. Ryan was named after Yates' second principal [1].

The school opened as a school only for African-Americans; it was desegregated by 1970.

Several Third Ward area subdivisions, including University Oaks, Oak Manor, University Woods, Washington Terrace, and portions of Riverside Terrace, are zoned to Ryan Middle School. In addition, Ryan serves a small portion of Midtown Houston (the portion south of U.S. Route 59).

Cuney Homes and Ewing Apartments, units of public housing, are zoned to Ryan.

Residents of the Texas Medical Center's Laurence H. Favrot Tower Apartments are zoned to Ryan.

Ryan Middle School has one of the lowest Houston ISD middle school populations.

During the 2004-2005 school year, the school had 556 pupils [2].

There were no Native Americans enrolled during that school year.

93% of the students qualified for free or reduced lunch.

The school had 879 pupils during the 2000-2001 school year. The population in 2004-2005 was a 36.75% decrease from the 2000-2001 population.
