In chess, C79 is the ECO code for the Ruy Lopez, Steinitz Defense Deferred (Russian Defense) chess opening. The game begins 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 d6. This is the alternative to the usual 5....Nxd4 (The Open Variation) or 5....Be7 (The Closed). Black maintains some flexibility, though this opening is of limited importance since it's rarely played today. Alexander Alekhine scored +7=4-1 as Black with it.
