Ruy Lopez, Schliemann Defense

In chess, C63 is the ECO code for the Ruy Lopez, Schliemann Defense chess opening. The game begins 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 f5. The German lawyer Adolf Schliemann actually played a variation of the Cordel Defense: 3....Bc5 4.c3 f5. The variation originated in 1847 by Carl Jaenisch. By giving up the f-pawn for the e-pawn, Black attains a pawn majority in the center which can be quite beneficial and by opening the f-file, Black can pressure the kingside with the rook on f8. It's risky play with Black sometimes sacrificing one or two pawns. Rudolf Spielmann played it as Black +6=5-1 as did Frank Marshall +9=8-4. Alexander Shabalov has a plus score in international play.
