Ruy Lopez, Classical (Cordel) Defense

In chess, C64 is the ECO code for the Ruy Lopez, Classical (Cordel) Defense chess opening. The game begins 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Bc5. This is the oldest Ruy Lopez variation. White usually continues with 4.c3 developing the attack on the center. Black's sharpest move is the counterattack 4....f5. Wilhelm Steinitz scored +5=2-4. Boris Gulko plays it. The Australian GM, Ian Rogers, has scored +7=4-1 in international competition.
