[edit] History

Former Ruttonjee Sanatorium, which was set up for tuberculosis treatment in 1949,with the support of Mr Jehangir Hormusjee Ruttonjee and the Hong Kong Tuberculosis, Chest and Heart Diseases Association. It was one of the main institutions for specifically treating tuberculosis in Hong Kong in the past. It was converted to Ruttonjee Hospital, a general hospital, in 1991 as the number of patient suffering from tuberculosis had been decreased. It is also because the patients can be healed by out-patient chemotherapy [1]. As a result, the hospital is allowed to provide various services to meet the requisites of the community.

After the reconstruction of the hospital, it becomes an acute general hospital with general medical and surgical specialities but doesn't provide paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology. Its surgical department earns high acclaims as Ruttonjee is the only hospital in Hong Kong providing sex changing operations. The geriatrics service has been developed in recent years in response to the aging population in Wan Chai district.
