[edit] About
Runaway Love is a song about runaways dealing with various problems, such as a drug-addicted mother and a mother's boyfriend who sexually harms her, a girl who deals with an alcoholic stepfather and her best friend is killed, and last an 11 year old girl who gets pregnant by a sixteen year old, who ends up leaving her. All three of these girls are running away in the video, when each two of them pass by Mary J. Blige and look back to see Mary looking back. The last girl is sitting on a park bench with Mary crying while Mary is also sitting there singing the hook. The three situations for each girl is :
1st situation : Lisa is nine years old and has a mother who is addicted to drugs and as the song states:
Mama is on drugs gettin high up in the kitchen .
Her mother has a boyfriend who assumingly rapes her. In the video, Lisa is trying to explains what goes on with her and the boyfriend in one shot, and in another the boyfriend and Lisa's mother are arguing, when later he comes into Lisa's room, undoes his shirt and lays on her bed tugging at her pants with she is sitting on the edge of the bed against the wall. Lisa later packs her bags and heads towards the door, looks back at her mother asleep on a table with smoke surrounding her and goes out the door, running past Mary, taking a look at her, and keeps running.
2nd situation:
Little 10-year-old Nicole (played by Raquel Castro) is a very self-conscious girl who nobody likes. She has an alcoholic stepfather who always seems to physically abuse her. In the video, he starts banging on the door as Nicole is adjusting her hair in the mirror. She hears a knock, and quickly runs under her bed before her step father comes in, stumbling while looking for her. The song mentions Nicole's emotional problems, as well as her only best friend whose name is Stacy, who was killed by a stray bullet during a drive by shooting. A shot in the video features Nicole sitting on her bed looking at a yearbook with Stacy's picture, circles it, and write "R.I.P" up under her picture with tears in her eyes. Apparently her father leaves the room, when Nicole starts packing some things and jumping out of her window to run away. Like Lisa, she runs past Mary and they both look at each other and Nicole continues to run.
3rd situation:
This scene takes place in a clinic where we see various shots of Erica (played by Keke Palmer) as she is dealing with pregnancy. The song says that she is only 11 years old, sleeping with a sixteen year old. Erica and her "boyfriend" (played by Julito McCullum) are seen in the backseat of a truck, where Erica takes a pill as her boyfriend strokes her chin and they look each other in the eyes. Erica believes that she is in love, so she insists on not using a condom. The final backseat scene shows her boyfriend climbing on top of her, preparing to have sexual intercourse. She later finds out she is pregnant and finds her boyfriend with another girl. She tries to confront him about her pregnancy, but he simply brushes her off with a mean hand gesture. The next shot is Erica at the front door of her house, with her hand on the doorknob, and there is an image in the middle of the door or Erica's mother shaking her, presumably finding out that Erica is pregnant. Erica lets go of the doorknob and runs to the park and sits on the bench while crying. Mary is sitting next to her singing the hook of the song.
The final shot of the video is shown as a candlelight vigil with young girls holding candles with Mary standing in front of them singing. It appears that there are "missing" posters of young girls. Ludacris begins talking saying that he feels like running away at times also, so he tells the young ladies to close their eyes, and to imagine all of them running away together, coming back & seeing that everything will be alright. Then he says "open your eyes", and viewers see flying missing child posters in the air as the song ends.
