A rumble seat is an unupholstered exterior seat which hinges or otherwise opens out from the rear of an early automobile, and seats one or more passengers. In America, this type of seating became largely obsolete in the 1930s and 1940s when cars became too fast for the comfort of such passengers. The definition differs from that of a dicky seat.
