Map of Rukungiri District

Rukungiri is a district in western Uganda. Like other Ugandan districts, it is named after its 'chief town'. The district has one tarmac road and boasts of very good cattle keeping activities in Buyanja. The district is shared between the Bakiga and the Bahororo, two of the major ethnic groups in Rukungiri

The climate is good for agriculture but the district is overpopulated and is one of the poorest in the country. It is boardered by Kabale, Kisoro, Ntungamo and Bushenyi Districts.

The district was the birth place of Kizza Besigye who was a candidate for the Ugandan Presidency in 2001 and 2006.
