Rufus L. Edmisten
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rufus L. Edmisten is a former North Carolina Secretary of State, Attorney General, and candidate for Governor in 1984. He is currently a lawyer in private practice.
Originally from Boone, NC, Edmisten served for ten years on the staff of U.S. Senator Sam Ervin. In 1973-1974, Edmisten was a staff counsel for the Senate Watergate Committee, which Ervin chaired. He then returned to North Carolina and was elected the state's attorney general. Edmisten served in that past for ten years.
Edmisten had a checkered political career, however, having faced allegations of wrongdoing. His gubernatorial campaign was derailed in part by a scandal involving the improper use of a supporter's private airplane, and he was forced to resign as North Carolina Secretary of State in 1996 after state auditors accused him of mismanagement.
