Ruapehu District is a territorial authority located near the centre of New Zealand's North Island.
Ruapehu District has an area of 6,700 square kilometers and a population of 13,150 as of 2005.

Features of the District are is that it is landlocked, is the home of Mount Ruapehu, Tongariro National Park. The Raurimu Spiral is also located in this district.
The tourist towns of Whakapapa, National Park and Ohakune are also located here.
Waiouru, which has an elevation of 520 metres, is located in the extreme E of the district and is home to the large Waiouru Military Camp.
The Ruapehu District is home to the infamous Desert Road which begins at Waiouru and passes Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro before ending at Rangipo.
