Royal Theatre (Northampton)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Royal Theatre is a 19th century theatre in Northampton, England. The Grade II listed building was opened in 1884 and designed by C. J. Phipps. It is next door and physically linked to the more modern Derngate theatre, and since 1999 both theatres have been managed by the Northampton Theatres Trust.

Both the Royal and the Derngate are currently being completely refurbished, due for completion sometime in 2006. The Royal is a relatively small, but absolutely beautiful Victorian gem, and full of atmosphere. The Derngate next door is a 20th Century "Brutal" design, but is comfortable. It is also claimed to be in the top three UK concert venues for its acoustics - excellent for listening to classical music.
