Royal Prince Alfred Hospital

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (abbreviated RPAH or RPA, and sometimes shortened to PA Hospital) is a major hospital in Sydney, Australia, located on Missenden Road in Camperdown. It is a teaching hospital of the Central Clinical School of the University of Sydney and is situated in proximity to the Blackburn Building of the university's main campus, one of the buildings that house the Faculty of Medicine. RPAH is the largest hospital in the Eastern Zone of the Sydney South West Area Health Service, with approximately 700 beds (circa 2005).

An Australian reality television show, RPA, is filmed there and depicts the everyday workings of a major metropolitan hospital.

The funds for RPAH were raised by public conscription. This was in an effort to make a monument to commemorate the assassination attempt on Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh by Henry James O'Farrell.

Royal Prince Alfred Hospital is a 750 bed tertiary hospital that arguably receives patients of the highest clinical acuity of any tertiary facility in New South Wales (NSW). It is one of the oldest hospitals in NSW and, following a $350 million redevelopment, offers state of the art facilities and technology across all of its clinical disciplines. In addition, RPAH offers unparalleled clinical leadership across a large number of medical specialties both procedural and non-procedural and has an enviable record of clinical and non-clinical based research. A busy and skilled team

An integral part of the diverse multi-cultural community surrounding it, RPA provides an interesting and challenging environment for the skilled medical staff working there. RPA's dedicated staff of over 4,000 provides the largest number of in-patient treatments in the state, almost 500,000 out-patient treatments and delivers 4,000 babies each year. With around 50 percent of all admissions being district services, RPA treats more public patients than any other hospital in the state. Learning and contributing

A crucial part of RPA's skilled team are the physicians who undertake training at the hospital. Their role is vital in the successful management of the hospital. Throughout its long history, RPA has provided a stimulating and caring environment in which junior doctors can gain the skills they need to further their medical careers. Extensive on-site supervision and support are available at all times. State's first teaching hospital

This contribution started early, with RPA being the first teaching hospital in NSW.

It was only two years after its establishment in 1882 that the hospital accepted its first medical students from the Medical School of the University of Sydney. Since then, the hospital has benefited from this close relationship at the teaching, research and clinical levels.

The hospital has a similar record of national leadership in the surgical and diagnostic disciplines, and is committed to ensuring that professional excellence is the key criterion for progression within its ranks.

The RPA campus is also home to the largest volume of medical research undertaken within NSW. Tradition of medical excellence

Throughout its history, clinicians at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital have been responsible for an impressive list of innovations in clinical care, diagnosis and treatment, not only within Australia, but also at an international level.

RPA is home to more research institutes and specialist units than any other public hospital in Australia, including:

Melanoma Unit - the largest in the world National Liver Transplant Unit

Haemophilia Centre - Australia's first major centre in this area

Sleep Disorders Unit - an Australian first, the unit developed the revolutionary CPAP machine for sleep apnoea sufferers and pioneered non-invasive ventilation treatment for respiratory failure

Sydney Cancer Centre - Australia's largest and most comprehensive cancer treatment centre

Positron Emission Tomography Camera

National Medical Cyclotron National Poisons Register

Sydney Breast Cancer Institute - pioneered breast-sparing surgery in NSW

Woolcock Institute - Australia's only centre devoted to respiratory diseases and the leading partner in the national Cooperative Research Centre's asthma study.

For RPA, this reputation for excellence means it has the highest percentage of surgical admissions amongst NSW principal referral hospitals, providing junior staff with opportunities for unique training experiences.

The 45,000 adult and paediatric emergency department patients treated each year also allow the hospital to support an active teaching program for emergency medicine trainees, residents and interns. New facilities

To support this tradition of excellence and innovation, RPA has undertaken an extensive program of refurbishment and construction that blends clinical advances with an ongoing commitment to quality patient care.

Medical staff have access to the latest innovations in hospital technology and patient care in the new 750 bed facilities:

Hot floor - A unique purpose-built nucleus of critical care services designed to improve patient care and clinical outcomes. It brings together operating theatres; intensive care; high dependency units; cardiac intensive care; neuro intensive care; day-stay centre and neonatal intensive care.

Sydney Cancer Centre - The only ambulatory care centre of its type in Australia, combining diagnostic, consultative and follow-up services.

Obstetric and gynaecological services - State-of-the-art birthing unit with nine delivery rooms, three home-like birthing rooms and 32 neonatal cots.

Diagnostic services - Facilities include positron emission tomography; X-ray/digital scanner rooms; computerised axial tomography scanners; ultrasound room; magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); and angiography rooms.

Joint replacement and rheumatology centre - 60 bed unit covering diagnosis; surgery; medical treatment unit; rehabilitation; allied health services and hydrotherapy pool.

Day-surgery centre - 38 bed centre containing separate admissions station, operating theatres and recovery area in a calming environment.

In-patient wards - 210 single bedrooms with ensuites emphasising patient privacy and education; public spaces including gardens for patients; views of the city, hospital gardens and the University of Sydney; interview rooms; and separate patient and visitor lifts. Comprehensive clinical services

For many years, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital has been a national and international leader in developing advancements in diagnostic and clinical services. Within RPA itself, four clinical sections provide specialty clinical services: Division of Medicine, Division of Surgery, Division of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Division of Diagnostic Service.

In addition, a range of Allied Health services are also provided, including clinical psychology, health promotion, nutrition and dietetics, orthotics, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, podiatry, speech pathology, social work and volunteer service. Leader in research

Royal Prince Alfred Hospital has a long tradition of clinical and experimental research.

Within the hospital, there are a large number of renowned medical researchers and units recognised as national and international centres of excellence.

This means more projects initiated by RPA receive support from the State and Federal Government than any other hospital in the state.

At RPA, the close links between research and service delivery allow rapid transfer of new advances from the laboratory to the ward.

Research workers at the hospital collaborate extensively with their colleagues both within the hospital and at a national and international level.

The quality of research undertaken at RPA is reflected in the regular publication of original articles and editorial comments by hospital staff in the world's top medical journals, such as The Lancet and The New England Journal of Medicine.

The hospital also sponsors a number of institutes at the University of Sydney, including the Heart Research Institute; Centenary Institute for Cancer Medicine and Cell Biology; Kanematsu Laboratories; General Endocrinology Group and Institute of Respiratory Medicine. Staff facilities at RPA

Royal Prince Alfred provides its staff with a variety of facilities and services.

A sports and social club within the hospital grounds offers gymnasium facilities and a large swimming pool. The University of Sydney also provides access to attractive open spaces and excellent recreational facilities.

For staff living away from the hospital, on-site parking is available at very reasonable rates. Local environment

RPA is located in Camperdown, an inner-city suburb of Sydney. There are excellent transport facilities close to the hospital allowing easy access to most areas of the city.

As an international city, Sydney provides access to a stimulating range of cultural, sporting and social activities. The hospital is just 15 minutes by bus from Sydney's Central Business District and entertainment centre.

In addition, RPA is only a five-minute walk from the cosmopolitan inner-city suburb of Newtown, which offers an interesting variety of shopping and lifestyle activities. Named one of Sydney's top "Eat Streets", Newtown has a vibrant food scene and street culture.
