The Royal Observatory, Edinburgh (ROE) is located on Blackford Hill in the south of the city of Edinburgh. It started as the Playfair Observatory, located on Calton Hill, and became the Royal Observatory during the visit of George IV to Scotland in 1822 (the original site is now the City Observatory).

The ROE hosts the UK Astronomy Technology Centre which builds many the state-of-the-art instruments for astronomical telescopes throughout the world, and in orbit. Also on the site is the Institute for Astronomy, part of the School of Physics at the University of Edinburgh.
