[edit] History

The Royal Guards were established by King Chulalongkorn the Great in 1859 when he was a junior king. At first the king used the Royal Guards as servants, for such purposes as scaring crows. In that time, the peasantry referred to the Royal Guards as "Mahardlek Laikar" (soldiers whose work is to scare crows). When he was crowned in 1868, the King took his Royal Guard, and from them formed a Royal Bodyguard, called the "Taharn Songlow" (24 soldiers). In 1870, the Royal Guard regiment was given the duty as the King's Guard. Their duties involved escorting the king as he travelled around the country.
