The Royal Bahraini Navy protects the waters of Bahrain. The Navy, previously called the Bahrain Defense Force, Naval Branch, later the Bahrain Amiri Navy, consisted in 1992 of eight vessels and 500 sailors.[1] The lead ship is the 138-meter frigate, Sabha, formerly a U.S. warship.[2] Two fast attack craft, Al Manamah and Al Muharraq, are sixty-two-meter Lürssen corvettes. The Navy also operates four forty-five-meter Lürssen fast-attack craft and two thirty-eight-meter craft. Additionally, the coast guard operates a variety of patrol craft, as well as three landing craft and a hovercraft.
The Navy has a flight wing, which can operate off the corvettes, consisting of one or two Eurocopter Dauphins capable of launching Exocet anti-ship missiles.[3]
