Rowland Allanson-Winn, 5th Baron Headley

Rowland George Allanson-Winn, 5th Baron Headley (London, January 19, 1855 – June 22, 1935, London), also known as Shaikh Rahmatullah al-Farooq, was a British soldier and peer and a prominent convert to Islam.
Lord Headley was born in A.D. 1855 and was a leading British peer, statesman and author. Educated in Cambridge University, he became a peer in 1877, served in the army as a captain and later on as Lieutenant-Colonel in the 4th Battalion of North Minster Fusiliers.
Although an engineer by profession he had wide literary tastes. One time he was the editor of the Salisbury Journal. Lord Headley was also an enthusiastic practitioner of boxing as well as other arts of self defence, and in 1890 co-authored, with C. Phillips-Wolley, the classic "Broadsword and Singlestick". Allanson-Winn was the author of several other books, most well known amongst them being: A Western Awakening to Islam. Lord Headley embraced Islam on 16 November 1913(8) and adopted the Muslim name of Shaikh Rahmatullah al-Farooq. He was a widely travelled man and he visited India in 1928.
