[edit] Legend
After seeing the legend was removed and replaced with a link to a legend that is used for interstates, but not for state roads, and indeed uses different colors, without the individual articles being adjusted, I looked at the other state route boxes and found they all used the same colors as NY was previously and they were all imbedded. I think it would be better if they all referenced a common routebox however so here is the analysis:
OK (none)
KY (no junctions/no legend)
MD (no legend)
MO (no legend)
CA (IMBEDDED) #d3d3d3 | deleted (no longer in system) #dda0dd | unconstructed #ffffe0 | closed #ffdead | crossing with no access #afeeee | begin/end concurrency, bold route is carried through #ffffff | a bold route on white background indicates termini.
WA (IMBEDDED) #d3d3d3 | deleted (no longer in system) #dda0dd | unconstructed #ffffe0 | closed #ffdead | crossing with no access #afeeee | begin/end concurrency, bold route is carried through #ffffff | a bold route on white background indicates termini.
NH (IMBEDDED) #d3d3d3 | deleted (no longer in system) #dda0dd | unconstructed #ffffe0 | closed #ffdead | crossing with no access #afeeee | begin/end concurrency, bold route is carried through #ffffff | a bold route on white background indicates termini.
TX (IMBEDDED) #ffff99 | county name #dda0dd | unconstructed #afeeee | begin/end concurrency , bold route is carried through #ffdead | intersecting routes are concurrent #d3d3d3 | deleted (no longer in system) #ffffe0 | closed #ffffff | a bold route on white background indicates termini.
NY (PREVIOUSLY IMBEDDED AS) #ffff99 | county name #dda0dd | unconstructed #afeeee | begin/end concurrency, bold route is carried through #ffdead | intersecting routes are concurrent #d3d3d3 | deleted (no longer in system) #ffffe0 | closed #ffffff | a bold route on white background indicates termini.
COMMON TO ALL: #d3d3d3 | deleted (no longer in system) #dda0dd | unconstructed #ffffe0 | closed #ffdead | intersecting routes are concurrent #afeeee | begin/end concurrency, bold route is carried through #ffffff | a bold route on white background indicates termini
Therefore I created a new {{Template:Routebox_legend}} to be referenced by routebox pages, starting with NY.

- Chris: The problem I see with referencing the legend offpage is that it is not available when looking at the route. I took your concept and made a global {{Template:Routebox_legend}} so that it is visible when viewing the article. Why do you want to have to link to the legend? --Censorwolf 13:17, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
- Mostly space concerns. We did something similar on WP:IH for a short time before deciding that the legend was a total waste. I'm not saying that's necessarily the case here, but we certianly don't need to color every single one. I suggest white backround for everything normal, and then perhaps some other coloration for anything unusual. I think that's how the {{routebox legend}} has it, no? But anyway, I noticed many of the NY articles have colors all over the place. (17 did anyway) Anyway, if colors are reserved for unusual situations only, then they aren't used enough to merit it being seen everywhere. Anyone not familiar with the legend can simply click on the link, and the legend is not just sitting there on every single route, even those that don't need it, taking up space for those that have already seen it zillions of times. Perhaps we can do one of those things where you click and it appears right there. I think I saw that somewhere on Wikipedia, and maybe it would be a bit cooler than just linking it like I did. --Chris 19:25, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
- Not sure how that's done either.
- Also NY-17 still has too many listed in the junction box and I'm not sure the colors are right. I did most of that list and I think I used the wrong colors at the time. I'd prefer the infobox had only a handful for a long route like that.
- For consistency's sake then I will assume you are making this change for the other state route boxes. If not, we should revert this to be like the other state boxes. (Better yet would be to have a single box that all state's use.) --Censorwolf 18:16, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

- 1. How do I join the edit project for highways? 2. If anyone's creating a SVG template for the NY state highway infobox, they should note in the info box that the highway shield for NY is derived from the state shield. 3. I notice on the Massachusetts highways, there is a reference to a " 1. Location Survey Sheets for Mile Marker Program" -- how do I get to this reference? I worked on some of the articles for Mass State Highways and I'd like to clean them up with the info box. Tckma 02:59, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
