Roumieh

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roumieh is a village east of Beirut in the metropolitan area of Lebanon. It is about a 25-minute drive from the nation's capital.

The village is mostly Maronite Christian, but there is also a strong Greek Orthodox presence. The two factions coexist peacefully. Fig orchards, olive trees and zaatar grow in abundance. Roumieh is known for its many gardens and hospitality. It is also famous for the Roumieh Prison, which contains more than 3000 prisoners.

Roumieh was never occupied during the Lebanese Civil War (1976-1990),because most of the people there were fighting under the Kataeb party, who protected the village . That why it was known as Joumhouriat Roumieh al Kataebia (The Kataeb republic of Roumieh).
