Rough sex is wild, energetic sexual intercourse. Bites, scratches, bleeding, and bruising are not an uncommon result. Rough sex may also occur during misogynistic/misandristic sex or other alternative fetishes, such as humiliation, spitting, choking, urinating, slapping or rough analingus, although one can have rough sex without also engaging in such practices.

Although rough sex may appear violent, it is not rape or sexual assault. While rough sex is consensual, rape and sexual assault are not. Consent is the prime distinction. However, it may not be possible to legally give consent to certain activities in certain jurisdictions; see the Operation Spanner case for an example of this in the UK.

Rough sex, in its more extreme manifestations that occur secondarily to sexual motives such as sadomasochistic preferences, is a fetish and one of the fastest growing genres in adult video production today.[citation needed] The most extreme examples of the genre, which also include fetishes of degradation and misogyny, are Khan Tusion's Meatholes and the rough oral sex series Slap Happy (pictured right). Notable producers within this genre are Max Hardcore, Meatholes' Khan Tusion and creator of Slap Happy, Brandon Iron.

Unlike many other forms of sexual intercourse, it has been said that females find more pleasure in rough sex than males.[citation needed] Rough sex can refer to any one of a number of fetishes.
