[edit] History
Playing piano from the age of three, Ross Copperman made music before he knew how to speak in coherent sentences. His mother finally gave in to lessons and their house was never quiet again. Copperman played in several bands and learned other instruments to find himself musically. While developing as a performer he began songwriting. He started listening to a new cd every week to get new songwriting ideas, a tradition he continues today. Ross has been compared to artists such as Billy Joel, Gavin Degraw and Elton John, with a modern pop groove able to mold into different forms of melodic rock.
After college, Ross did an internship at a New York jingle house, where he wrote advertising jingles to order. While there he wrote jingles for Fisher-Price and Sears. After that short stint in the advertising industry, he began entering competitions. He came third out of 35,000 entrants in the USA Songwriting Competition (his swag: “$5000 and a bunch of free stuff”), and then was named Best Unsigned Artist in the Freshtrax.com contest.
The Freshtrax prize was $10,000 and a 40-date tour of America. It wasn’t exactly a five-star jaunt - “I’d be by myself, fly to each city alone and do the show” - but it was great for literally getting his act together. “It got my chops up, and I was playing and going to places I’d never have gone to, like South Beach, Idaho.” And he kept touring for the next year, on a have-guitar-will-travel basis, until publishing companies and record labels started offering him deals.
Now relocated, and getting used to the lack of air conditioning and bad weather, he’s putting the finishing touches to his debut album. Ross has arrived at a time when quality young male singers are on the up. The door is open. A striking Southerner is about to walk through it.

[edit] Ross, today
Meet Ross Copperman - The boy from Roanoke, Virginia. He’s sung for as long as he can remember – he’ll tell you about being five years old and wailing along to the car radio with Mom. But what marks him out, in a region where even the postman sings a bit, is his ability to turn the music in his head into widescreen tunes. That’s “widescreen” as in “sweeping melodies and spacious choruses”, but his emotive, scuffed-up voice bestows an intimacy that makes each song feel as if it were written for the listener alone.
Ross started to write songs at college. The first song he wrote ‘Fly Away’, which appears on his forthcoming debut album, caused his teacher to convince him to take it up professionally. He did. He soon won several prestigious competitions, one of which earned him a 40-date US college tour. It didn’t take long for word to spread in the industry and several record companies were offering deals. He eventually took the decision of signing to UK label, Phonogenic / RCA Records.
Musically Ross can be described as a blue eyed soul boy of indie-rock. Aside from drawing on the rich history of musical culture in his surrounding landscape, Ross spent much of his youth plugged into what was happening on this side of the pond: Muse, Radiohead, Oasis, Led Zeppelin to name but a few.
Ross Copperman's songwriting style is based on what is going on in his life at the moment. "I feel like I get the most meaningful lyrics when I create fictitious characters based off of my emotions and life experiences". He dives into creative stories of love, heart-break, loss, becoming successful, and many other emotionally charged themes. Ross Copperman, unlike other musicians, does more than just write single-genre songs. He also writes rock pop, country, rhythm and blues, hip-hop and jazz; creating an original, eclectic mix every time.
