[edit] Sports

Rosie Malek-Yonan was a member of the Iranian 1980 Winter Olympic Team with fellow team member and sister Monica Malek-Yonan. However, the events of the Iranian Revolution made it virtually impossible for them to compete. The new regime required them to become Muslim, wear scarves and long skirts, and perform without music. The Malek-Yonan sisters decided not to compete under these conditions. [1], [2]

Author of The Crimson Field, Rosie Malek-Yonan's historical and literary epic novel is set in Urmia, Iran. It is based on real events and true family chronicles set to the backdrop of the Assyrian Genocide of 1914-1918 in the shadows of World War I where 750,000 Assyrians were massacred by the Ottoman Turks, Kurds and Persians.

On 22 April 2006, in a Zinda Magazine special, Rosie Malek-Yonan's The Crimson Field was selected as The Assyrian Event of the Year 6755/2005. Zinda Magazine said: "What makes The Crimson Field so riveting, so unorthodox, is its uncommon portrayal of the heinous acts committed against the Assyrian. Malek-Yonan leaves no stone unturned. She loads every page of her book with the horrors of the Turkish and kurdish murderers and rapists who savored the torment of their Christian neighbors...The literary masterpiece is a chronicle of Assyrians' struggle for hope and recognition emerging ever so slowly from heaps of despondency. It awakens its readers' conscience to the most fundamental factor in the survival of the Assyrian nationalism and heritage, the Assyrian strength of character and resolve to excel under any condition...The mass killing and deportations of the Assyrians between 1915 and 1923 is a story pleading admission. Rosie Malek-Yonan's book, through its sophisticated approach to history, was the most unsurpassed manner of shamelessly scolding nine decades of silence and omission. The Crimson Field was our finest answer to history."
