[edit] Location
Roselands lies in the Cooks River watershed. This river is tidal, up to the neighbouring suburb of Belmore.
The soil is clay, based on Wianamatta shale and is on the eastern edge of the great Cumberland Plain which extends westward to the Hawkesbury river and into the Blue Mountains. The topography is low rolling hills. Before settlement, the vegetation was open eucalyptus woodland.
[edit] History
[edit] Aboriginal
The first inhabitants of surrounding areas were Australian Aboriginals who arrived about 40,000 years ago. At the time of British settlement in 1788 the inhabitants were Aborigines of the Darug language group (a way of defining tribe) and they called themselves, and were known as Kuri or Koori. Land grants by the new colonial government began in about 1810.
[edit] European
This area was originally part of the suburb of Punchbowl and still shares it's postcode of 2196. H.R. Morgan was granted land in the area in 1842. John Fenwick bought 100 acres in about 1880 in the area between Canterbury, Canary and Bonds Roads. He built Belmore House on this land, which was demolished for the construction of the Roselands Shopping Centre. The closest railway line was built to the neighbouring suburb of Belmore in 1895 and extended to Bankstown in 1909.
The suburb takes its name from the golf course that originally occupied the land upon which the shopping centre now stands. It became a suburb on the 9th February 1987, after some years of agitation by local residents and members of parliament.
[edit] Politics
The area is the State seat occupied by current Premier of New South Wales, Morris Iemma. It is considered to be a safe Labor (Australian Labor Party) seat.
[edit] Roselands Shopping Centre
Roselands Shopping Centre was the first shopping mall built in Australia. It was built on the site of a golfcourse. It boasted a large Grace Bros. (now Myer), a movie cinema, an indoor rainfall water feature ("the raindrop fountain"), tennis courts and the first food court in Australia (demolished in 2000, remade as the Raindrop Food Court in December 2000). Many local bus services were diverted to service the new shopping centre upon its opening, but the centre was primarily designed for the age of the motor-car, being distant from any railway stations. It has since has had many upgrades although is presently smaller than most other Sydney shopping centres. It is currently owned and operated by Centro. It currently features a large 3 floor Myer store, Target, Coles, Food For Less, Lincraft, large food court and about 180 specialty stores selling products as diverse as board shorts and donuts. A development is set to start soon where a new 12 screen cinema will be built, although speculations are that it won't have this many screens, a new bowling alley, restaurants and about 50 new specialty stores.
[edit] Transport
King Georges Road is the main road through Roselands. It is a ring road which connects the northern suburbs of Sydney and the north coast motorways of New South Wales to the southern beaches of Sydney and the south coast motorways of New South Wales.
King Georges Road also connects Roselands to the M5 South Western Motorway which links to Sydney's International Airport (15 minutes drive east) and west to Canberra and Melbourne.
[edit] Demographics
Roselands is home to people of predominantly British and European heritage and is also noted for being the home of waves of new migrants. It has a large, well-established Greek Community. Other residents include people from many parts of the world including Lebanon, South Pacific nations (eg Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand), Sierra Leone, Ghana, Eastern European countries (especially following the fall of communism), South-East Asia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, (which is an Australian Territory).
[edit] Sport & Recreation
Roselands is the home of the local amateur soccer club the Roselands Raptors, which is based at Bennett Park.
