Roscellin

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roscellin (circa 10501120) was a philosopher opposed to Platonism and every kind of realism. This stance induced him to outline a criticism of language which has impressed some as being quite modern in scope. Roscellin taught at several French towns, among his pupils was Abelard who later criticized him. Roscellin's thought is known today only by quotations from his adversaries. Of all his writings only a letter to Abelard is extant. In 1092 he was accused of adhering to tritheism, a conception of the Christian trinity as three distinct deities. He initially denied being a tritheist, but later returned to it.
