Rosamorada

Rosamorada is both a municipality and a municipal seat in the state of Nayarit in Mexico. In 2000 the population of the municipality and the municipal seat was 34,683 and 3,552 respectively. The total area of the municipality was 2,073 km², which made up 7.51% of the total area of the state. It was the fifth largest municipality in the state.

[edit] Geography
Rosamorada is located in the north of the state with the following geographic coordinates: latitude north of parallel 21° 50' to 22° 20' and the meridian of 104° 56' al 105° 38' of longitude west. It has boundaries in the north with the municipalities of Tecuala and Acaponeta, in the east with the municipality of El Nayar, in the south with the municipalities of Ruíz and Tuxpan and in the west with the municipality of Santiago Ixcuintla. Toponymy
Rosamorada takes its name from the existence of a leafy tree of purple flowers called "clavellina" located in the center of the town, whose shade was sought out by beasts of burden, passengers, and stagecoaches that covered the route from Acaponeta to Tuxpan.
Orography
The eastern part of the municipality has steep lands with considerable elevation that form part of the Sierra Madre Occidental, among which we can mention "Cerro del Tlacuache", 1080 meters and "El Mezcal", 1,000 meters. The coastal plain is characterized by a flat relief formed by alluvial soils, flood plains, estuaries, and marshes along the coast of the Pacific.
Hydrography
In the municipality can be found the rivers of Bejuco, San Juan and San Pedro. The latter has the greatest flow and forms the boundary of Rosamorada with the municipalities of El Nayar, Ruiz and Tuxpan. There are several important permanent streams (arroyos): San Miguel, Tuxpeco, Rancho Viejo, El Tigre, El Bejuco, Rito, Naranjo, Cofradía, and Rosamorada. There are also three important estuaries: Laguna Agua Brava, Pescadero and Francisco Villa, which are located on the boundary with Santiago Ixcuintla and Tecuala.
Climate
The climate is hot subhumid and mild rainy, with rains falling between June and December or January. The average annual temperature is 25.6 °C. The average annual rainfall is 1,210 mm, of which 95 % is registered in the months of July to September. The hottest months are June to August and the winds blow from west to east.
Population centers
In 1995 Rosamorada had 3,393 habitantes; San Vicente 4,556; Los Pericos 2,441; Chilapa 2,277; Pimientillo 1,824 and El Tamarindo 1,544. 46% of the population lived in these settlements. There were also 71 places which contained 54% of the rest of the population.

Ethnic Groups
The indigneous population makes up 4.85% of the municipal total. The Cora group is the largest with 1,052 habitantes; in addition there are Huicholes, Náhuatls y Tepehuanos with: 377, 25 y 19 inhabitants respectively.
Demographic Evolution
Between 1990 and 1995 there was a negative growth rate. In 1995 the population was 35,007 inhabitants, while in 1990 it was 35,797. This tendency is recent since in 1960, 1970 and 1980, the number of inhabitants was 19,389, 28,740 and 34,695; respectively. The population density in 1995 was 17 inhabitants per square kilometer.
Education
The municipality of Rosamorada provides its school population with 40 preschool educational centers, 55 primary schools, and 28 middle schools. There is a secondary school and a middle-level professional school. There is one job center and 4 public libraries. The illiterate population makes up 12.05% of the inhabitants who are 15 years old or older. According to recent figures from INEGI (2004) the average number of years studied for those over the age of 15 was 5.9, below the national average of 7.5 and the state average of 7.3. In 2000 over 90% (92.9%) of the population between the ages of 6 and 14 was attending school.
Health
Health services are provided social security, with one IMSS (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social external clinic and one ISSSTE (Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado) unit. In the category of social assistance there are five clinics provided by IMSS- Solidaridad, 11 health centers and one hospital provided by the health services of the state of Nayarit. Housing
The municipality had a total of 7,840 dwellings (1995), of which 7,833 were classified as private dwellings and 7 as collective dwellings. There was an average of about 5 residents per dwelling. In rural aras most of the dwellings are rustic constructions made of light materials like wood, adobe, brick, and sheet metal.
Public Services
Of the total number of dwellings in the municipality 85.7% had potable water, 31.3% had a drainage system and 93.3%, electricity.
Communication routes
The municipal highway network was 190.2 kilómetros in 1995. 44.7% was paved and 55 % was gravelled, the rest being rural dirt roads. The paved highway network connects the municipal seat of Rosamorada with the junction with federal highway No. 15 México–Nogales and with the coast, passing through San Vicente and going as far as Pimientillo.
[edit] Economic activity
The economy is based on agriculture, cattle raising, and services. The main crops are beans, tobacco, sorghum, chile, rice, melon, and watermelon. The planted area was 246.22 square kilometres in 1995, which made up 11.88% of the municipal area. Seasonal crops made up 94% of the planted area.
There were 3,534 units (1995) for the raising of animals, of which 36% were for cattle, 56% for swine and the rest for sheep and goats. The animal inventory was 27,860 cattle, 5,096 swine, 631 sheep and 3,501 goats. There were also 23,207 poultry and 13 hives for the production of honey.
Fishing
The vast estuary area of Rosamorada makes it one of the municipalities with the greatest fishing potential in the state, mainly for shrimp. The volume of production for shrimp was 1,802.5 tons in 1995, which made up 16.1% of the state total. The main areas of shrimp production are: Pimientillo, Francisco Villa, Pescadero, Llano del Tigre, San Miguel and Pericos.
Forestry
The municipality had 614 units of forest production, producing mainly mangrove and a limited amount of tropical woods. There are also activities of gathering of burnable kindling for domestic use. In recent years there has been great deforestation.
Manufacturing
There were no important industries at the time of writing. Rosamorada had 28 small factories for the production of food, drinks, furniture, saddles, and tobacco.
Economically active population
The EAP in the municipality makes up 28% of the total population 12 years old and older. 74.2% of the employed population is in the agricultural sector, 5.9% in the manufacturing sector, 16.1% in the services sector, and 3.8% not specified. As the municipality is mainly dependent on agriculture, fishing, and animal raising, there is a tendency for sub-employment and emigration either to the United States or to major population centers in the country.

[edit] Tourist Sites
Unlike many of its neighboring municipalities Rosamorada has few attractions for the tourist.
The main tourist sites are: a reservoir and a swimming pool of warm water in Rosamorada; another pool called Balneario los Cajones in Paramita; warm water and a lagoon in Pescadero; and warm, sulfurous waters in San Marcos and San Diego.
Inside the town hall (la presidencia municipal) there is a small museum with some archeological figures found in the region, such as: clay idols, work tools, and cooking utensils.
