She was chosen to participate in the singing academy of Spanish television, Operación Triunfo, a series (similar to Pop Idol); she eventually won the first season of the competition in 2001.

López continued to gain in popularity and competed in he Eurovision Song Contest 2002 in Tallinn, finishing seventh for her performance of "Europe's Living a Celebration".

Noted for her fluctuating weight, in early 2006 López surprised critics and fans alike when she unveiled a new, trim figure in time to compete in a televised dance competition series entitled ¡Mira quién baila! (Look Who's Dancing), a variation of Dancing with the Stars, which she ended up winning.
