Roquetaillade Castle
Roquetaillade has always been inhabitated since the stone age. Its natural location proposed lodging (caves) and defense. The first wooden castle probably dates from the 8th or 9th century. With the evolution of techniques, stone began to be used and during 5 centuries the first castle or "Old Castle" of Roquetaillade evolved. In 1306 Gaillard de la Mothes decided to build a second castle within the fortified town. With the permission of King Edward the 1st and the finance of the Pope Clement the V (his uncle) the "new" castle of Roquetaillade was built.
What we see today is a unique example of medieval architecture, with two castles set within the same walls, still lived in by the same family for over seven hundred years. Roquetaillade castle
