[edit] Origins

The Iwi of the Mahia People. Rongomaiwhahine is the famous mother of the Rongomaiwhahine and Ngati Kahungunu peoples.

Rongomaiwhahine first marriage was to Tamatakutai. Together they lived at Maramahatea on the very tip of Mahia Peninsula. It was spectulated that Tamatakutai drowned while surfing with Kahungunu who then married Rongomaiwhahine (some say that Kahungunu killed Tamatakutai so that he could take Rongomaiwhahine as his wife).

Her Marae was called Kaihau because of the windy area it is located (This Marae no longer exists as a structure). Her Meeting house was called Te Atihau.
