Ronan is a city located in Northwest Montana in Lake County, Montana on the Flathead Indian Reservation about 12 miles south of Flathead Lake. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. Ronan is located in Lake County.

Ronan is located at 47°31′40″N, 114°6′1″W (47.527758, -114.100189)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.7 km² (1.1 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,812 people, 699 households, and 420 families residing in the city. The population density was 660.0/km² (1,701.5/mi²). There were 755 housing units at an average density of 275.0/km² (709.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 62.42% White, 0.11% African American, 33.06% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 3.81% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.37% of the population.

There were 699 households out of which 34.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.6% were married couples living together, 15.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.9% were non-families. 33.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.18.

In the city the population was spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 84.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $22,422, and the median income for a family was $29,750. Males had a median income of $27,847 versus $17,454 for females. The per capita income for the city was $11,678. About 20.0% of families and 24.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 26.7% of those under age 18 and 21.8% of those age 65 or over.

Ronan was named in 1885, after Major Peter Ronan, superintendent of the Flathead Indian Reservation. It serves as the hub of the agricultural community in the Mission Valley. Adorned with the beauty of the Mission Mountains and various sources of fishing and wildlife habitat, the community of more than 3,000 residents offers a wealth of resources and enjoyment (5).
