The words Romanism and Romanist are used in two different contexts.

Romanism is used as a derogatory term for Roman Catholicism. It was often used by Protestants to denote the idea that the Roman Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon. A few extended this idea to include the claim that the Roman Catholic Church is the harbor of the antichrist.

Romanism was also the name of a Flemish school of painters from the beginning of the 16th century, the greatest of which was Jan Gossaert. They were among the first Flemish painters to be influenced by the Italian Renaissance.
