Romanian lexis

The lexis of the Romanian language (or Daco-Romanian), a Romance language, has changed over the centuries as the language evolved from Vulgar Latin, to Proto-Romanian, to medieval, modern and contemporary Romanian.

[edit] Proto-Romanian
The vocabulary of the Proto-Romanian language was primarily of Latin origin, along with several hundred words considered to be from one or more Paleo-Balkan languages spoken in the area during the times of the Roman occupation. Words of Byzantine Greek origin already entered Vulgar Latin and these in turn passed into Proto-Romanian, perhaps supplemented by additional Byzantine loans [citation needed]. It was also during the period of Proto-Romanian that Slavonic loanwords began to enter the language, Slavonic-speaking groups having overrun the Balkans by the 6th Century and 7th Century AD.
[edit] Medieval Romanian
By the later Middle Ages, a great amount of Slavonic loans had already entered Romanian. Byzantine Greek, Bulgarian, Turkish (and through Turkish, Arabic and Persian), Hungarian, German and other languages further contributed loanwords into Romanian.
