The Romanian Football Championship (Romanian: Campionatul României la fotbal) is the official football league of Romania.
The championship is organised into three divisions ("divizii"). Liga 1, formerly known as Divizia "A" is the top division and is administered by the Professional Football League (LPF), while the other tow divisions, Divizia B and Divizia C are under the jurisdiction of the Romanian Football Federation (FRF).

[edit] History
Official football competitions in Romania began in 1909, the most important of which was the ASAR Cup (Asociaţiunea Societăţilor Atletice din România - Romanian Athlete Societies Association). Winners of the ASAR cup were regarded as football champions of Romania.
A true league competition began in 1921, on a regional basis, with the champion being decided by knock-out matches (later, a play-off) between winners of each region's championship.
Since 1932 the league is organised into divisions (initially only two).
[edit] The competition
Divizia A is made up of a single series of 18 teams each season. Divizia B has two regional series of 18 teams each, and Divizia C has six regional series of 18 teams each.
Each team plays two matches with every other team in its series, one at home, and one away. This amounts to a total of 34 matches per season for teams in divisions A, B and C.
