The term "Roman Empire" can be used to denote any of a series of different empires, usually referring to one of the following:
- "The Roman Empire" usually describes the dominion of the Romans, eventually encompassing the entire Mediterranean, regardless of the form of government.
- The term Roman Empire is also often, though incorrectly used, to describe the Roman Republic, which was the Ancient Roman polity in the centuries preceding its reorganization under the leadership of Augustus.
- The Roman Empire's continuation in the East as the Byzantine Empire. In certain specific contexts, usually referring to the time before the fall of the Western Roman Empire, it is also often referred to as the Eastern Roman Empire.
- The Holy Roman Empire (800–1806), later with the addition "of the German Nation". It developed out of the eastern part of the Frankish kingdom, encompassing Germany and Italy, and later developed into a political conglomeration of lands in Central Europe.
