Worldwide distribution of Catholic (yellow), Protestant (purple) and Orthodox (cyan) Christians relative to the total population per country.

Catholic countries are countries noted as traditionally having a heavy predominance of adherents of the Catholic Church in their populations. Italy is probably the best known of these countries, particularly since the Vatican is situated within the city of Rome. Other well known Catholic countries in Europe include France, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Slovakia, Lithuania, Poland, Ireland, Croatia, and Malta. Catholic countries in other parts of the world include some Asian nations such as the Philippines, or many of the countries of Latin America.

The proportion of Catholic population of each country of the world was taken from the US State Department's International Religious Freedom Report 2004. Other sources used were hierarchy.org and the CIA World Factbook ([1]). The total population of each country was taken from The US Census Bureau at census.gov (2005 estimates). Keep in mind that some of the percentages expressed in this article only refer to the adult population of the country, yet they are used on the country's total population. Also keep in mind that the figures indicate only the number of baptized people, which includes the people who can be agnostic/atheists or have changed their religion.

Ironically, because of social and cultural pressures influencing nonreligious people to baptize their children as Catholic in "Catholic" countries, active practicing Catholics historically have tended to form a considerably larger portion of the total Catholic population in countries which are not generally considered "Catholic" countries (such as the United Kingdom) than in those that are (such as France or Italy).

[edit] By region

These percentages were calculated by using the above numbers. The first percentage, 4th column, is the percentage of population that is Catholic in a region (Catholics in the region * 100/total population of the region). The last column shows the Catholic percentage compared to the total Catholic population of the world (Catholics in the region * 100/total Catholic population of the world).

(Note: Egypt, Sudan, and other Arab Maghreb countries are counted as part of North Africa, not Middle East).
