From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston is an ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in the southern United States and is comprised of the entire state of South Carolina. It is led by a prelate bishop which serves as pastor of the mother church, Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in the City of Charleston.
The diocese was created from territories of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. The Diocese of Charleston was canonically erected on July 11, 1820 by Pope Pius VII.The first bishop was the Most Rev. John England. The present bishop is the Most Rev. Robert J. Baker. The bishop emeritus is Most Rev. David B. Thompson. When the Diocese is financially in order, it will be split in half because of the rapidly growing population of Catholics in South Carolina.
Charleston is a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Atlanta.
