Roman Catholic Apostolic Prefecture of the Marshall Islands
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Roman Catholic Apostolic Prefecture of the Marshall Islands is an ecclesiastical territory below the rank of diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in the Marshall Islands. It is a suffragan of the United States Metropolitan Province of Agaña. The apostolic prefecture is led by a prelate called the prefect which pastors the motherchurch, the Cathedral of the Assumption in Majuro. The prefect does not have the episcopal dignity and is usually appointed from the local missionary Jesuits.
The apostolic prefecture was established on April 23, 1993 by Pope John Paul II as a result of a split of the former Diocese of Carolines-Marshalls. Its former half became the Diocese of Caroline Islands.
