[edit] Map distortion
There is a huge distortion to the Italian coast shown SW, South and SE of Rome. Anyone know the reason for this? It doesn't affect the subject displayed on the map but I'm curious if there was some massive coastal change at that time - as there was in Netherlands - or is it an error by the cartographer?

Hi, I drew this image and contributed it for the article when a previous similar map was deleted (as it had no attribution or copyright status whatsoever). Regarding the embarassing distortion with regard to the Italian coastline, this was entirely my own mistake, and occured when I mispositioned a curved line using The GIMP. Because I was unfamiliar with the GIMP at the time, I was afraid to correct the error for fear of having to redraw a rather complicated curved line of which the Italian coastline was a part; so, I lazily left it alone. It probably should be corrected; I apologize for any confusion caused by this.
As for the historical inaccuracies mentioned by MariusA, please feel free to edit this image in any way you feel would correct factual errors—the image is released to the public domain, and I drew it entirely in the spirit of Wiki (i.e., merciless re-editing is a good thing, and we should not adopt a proprietary stance toward our contributions), so please do not be concerned about hurting my feelings :). The source of information used for the dates, locations, and migrations of the various peoples of the Balkans was gleaned largely from the previous, now-deleted map image (which, as mentioned above, included no source attribution). So, if anyone has a more authoritative source to be used as a basis for changing erroneous information in the map, by all means please take the initiative and edit this map (or contribute a new, better one, perhaps).
