Rolls-Royce Gnome

The Rolls-Royce Gnome is a single spool turboshaft originally developed by the De Havilland Engine Company from a General Electric design.

A 2 stage HP turbine drives the 10 stage all-axial compressor, whilst a single stage free power turbine drives the load. The combustor is annular. The engine was one of the first developed with an analogue computer as part of the fuel control system, specifically to control fuel flow durng acceleration to prevent engine surge occurring.

Performance data for the H1400-1 version, fitted to the Sea King Commando and Boeing Vertol 107 are as follows:

Airflow 13.8 lb/s

Overall Pressure Ratio 8.6

As a result of the low airflow and reasonably high overall pressure ratio, the blades at the rear of the compressor are extremely small.
