Roller hockey at the 1992 Summer Olympics
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Roller hockey was one of the demonstration sports introduced in the official programme of the 1992 Summer Olympics, held in Barcelona. Its widespread support and top teams in the Catalonian region prompted the Organizing Committee to suggest its inclusion in the Olympic programme. Held from 26 July to 7 August, it comprised a single event for men. This sport was contested in four venues: Vic, Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, Reus and Barcelona. Twelve nations entered a team, in a total of 120 players. The big favourites Spain, Italy, Portugal and Argentina all ended in the first four places with the Portuguese (world champions in the previous year) failing the podium and Argentina taking the gold away from the hosts.
In a preliminary round, the teams were divided into two groups according to the results of the 1991 World Championship, held in Portugal. Group A played in the Pavelló del Club Patí Vic, in Vic, while Group B played in the Pavelló de l'Ateneu de Sant Sadurní, in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. The first three in each group advanced to the semi-finals which were played in the Pavelló d'Esports de Reus, Reus, on a league-system. The top two teams played the final and the following two teams played the bronze medal match, in the Palau Blaugrana.
