Roger Deakins (born May 24, 1949 in Torquay, Devon, England) is a cinematographer, educated at the National Film and Television School in England. He is most closely associated with the visionary auteurs the Coen brothers and has been their sole cinematographer since working on 1991's Barton Fink, though he has also worked with directors Michael Radford, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, and M. Night Shyamalan.
Among Deakins' films are The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Fargo (1996), Kundun (1997), and O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) - all Oscar nominated for best cinematography.
Deakins discovered his passion for still photography while studying for a career in graphic design, at what is now the Bath School of Art & Design. Following his education at the National Film School, Deakins was commissioned to create a documentary on his hometown (Welcome to Britain (1976)). This began his career as a cinematographer, and he worked in the documentary field for seven years.
