Talk:Rock and roll anthem
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
C'mon. Switchfoot and Reel Big Fish? I like them but no way are those anthems, they didn't have the influence of Nirvana or Springsteen or whatnot.Dirtybutclean 13:26, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
What does "Good" by Better Than Ezra have to do with the subject of this page? I haven't heard it, but the lyrics don't have anything to do with rock and roll, which is the topic here. Ortolan88
Took it out, ended up attracting attention to the page, many more songs added, legitimate ones. Ortolan88
I seem to be dating myself. All the ones I am adding are from the seventies, give or take a few years. Do rock artists sing rock and roll anthems anymore? soulpatch
"My generation" is certainly an anthem, but it is not a "rock and roll anthem" as defined at the top of this article. Either we need to change the definition of "rock and roll anthem", or else take "My Generation" away. The mere fact that it is celebratory or anthemic does not match the definition as stated in this article. soulpatch
- Oh, come on! If "Rock and Roll Part II" is an anthem just on the basis of its title then "My Generation" is an anthem because of its driving force and commitment to the idea of music. Maybe you aren't old enough to understand, but when that song came out it electrified me and many another. "People try to put us down" for reasons not specified in the song, including dress, behavior, and music. "Do You Believe in Magic" is a weenie song (that I love) that just happens to have a line about rock and roll in it. "My Generation" embodies rock and roll. Since I wrote the definition and started the article, I have at least some claim to make the assertion that the song belongs because of the force of its allusion to rock and roll without ever stating it in so many words. Don't be such a square. )(That reminds me of another song to add.) Ortolan88

- First of all, having written the definition and started the article gives you exactly zero authority over this article, as you should well know if you have worked on Wikipedia for any length of time at all. Second, you are going to have to come up with a better argument for including it under the definition of "rock and roll anthem" than the fact that it happened to have electrified you in your youth. There is no point in having a definition in the first sentence if you don't bother to conform to it. So since you are so insistent on including this song, I have changed the definition to make it broader. "My generation" is just as the title says--a song about a generation. "Do You Believe in Magic" has more than "a line" about rock and roll. The entire song is a paeon to rock and roll, from the first stanza that talks about how the music can free your soul, or the next stanza that talks about your feet tapping and you can't stop, or that the magic is in the music and the music is in me. There is no comparison between that song, which is entirely about rock and roll, and "My Generation", which is about the the Boomer Generation's sense of identity. soulpatch
- I like your improvement. See what a little uncivilized discusssion can do. Ortolan88
Whew! :) soulpatch
Lou Reed wrote a song called "Rock and Roll". Mitch Ryder had the hit. Mitch, who broke out with a band called the Detroit Wheels, had changed record labels and fired the band (changing labels was a good idea, firing the band was a big mistake) and formed a new band called Detroit. It was this band that recorded the Lou Reed song. I have the album. It is not the Detroit Wheels. I put this in here because people keep "correcting" to the wrong band name. I also stuck it in the article, but I'm putting it here because presumably talk pages are never edited (if they were, I'd remove some of the nonsense spewed by me above), but information has a way of getting lost from articles. How is the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" a rock and roll anthem? Apropos, there is no apostrophe in the title. I also added AC/DC's "Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution' in 1980. ~Beatles
- ’m worse at what I do best
- And for this gift I feel blessed
- Our little group has always been
- And always will until the end
Also: I don't really know, but "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock'n'roll)" might qualify as a rock anthem - it is mentioned so on the AC/DC wiki page. ~Beatles
- Adding it.
I also recommend adding Chuck Berry's "Rock and Roll Music"
- "Rock and Roll Music" is already there. Ortolan88
I think there should be a seperate page just for youth anthems, since if you look into it there are almost as many of those as there are rock anthems. And you may find one that isn't even rock music.
[edit] Song list?
This page seems to be some cross between a "songs that mention rock and roll" list and a "my favourite songs" list. I'd suggest that it either be tightened to include a few examples of iconic rock and roll examples, or changed into an actual list page. I am going to remove the quoted song lyrics in the middle of the page which seem entirely random. Jkelly 23:02, 24 September 2005 (UTC)
