Robinton

Robinton was the MasterHarper of Pern in Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series. His childhood and education is recounted in The Masterharper of Pern. A musical prodigy, he had the ability to speak with dragons, a gift that remained with him his entire life. He was also a wise diplomat, teacher, and leader. He was estranged from his father when young, but surpassed both his parents by composing popular songs throughout his childhood, becoming a Journeyman harper at fifteen, developing a powerful Baritone voice, and eventually becoming MasterHarper. Later in life, he helped the Benden Weyrleaders, Lessa and F'lar, deal with the return of Thread (Dragonflight) and gained the love and respect of everyone on Pern. He had a great fondness for Benden Wine, which could be said to have saved his life in one point in The White Dragon. Eventually, Master Robinton retired to Cove Hold in the Southern Continent, where he died helping to engineer the final downfall of Thread.

Master Robinton's closest friends were F'lon, Silvina, and Shonagar, and his teachers included Masterharper Gennell, Master Lobirn, and Master Washell. When Robinton eventually moved to Cove Hold on the Southern Continent, he became closer friends with Lytol, former Lord Warder of Ruatha Hold and a former Benden brown rider, as well as D'ram, rider of bronze Tiroth and a former Oldtimer Weyrleader of Ista. Robinton also has a notorious fondness for Benden white wine, and retains a certain special affection for Benden Weyrwoman Lessa. As a teacher and mentor, Robinton was incomparable, and his favourite students seem to be Sebell, Menolly, and Piemur.

Robinton died in the Aivas control room, never having fully recovered from being kidnapped shortly before. After his death, many people on Pern were greatly affected, as he had been a cornerstone of the world.
