From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Robin Szolkowy (born 17 July 1979 in Greifswald, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany) is a pair figure skater. He is currently German national pair champion with his partner Aljona Sawtschenko.
Szolkowy's father was a Tanzanian doctor, who studied in Greifswald. His mother is a nurse originally from Greifswald. When Robin Szolkowy was 4 years old, mother and son moved to Erfurt, where he started with figure skating.
Robin Szolkowy became German pair champion with two different partners. He lives and trains in Chemnitz. His home club is the Chemnitzer EC.
His first partner was Johanna Otto. Later Robin Szolkowy skated together with Claudia Rauschenbach, the daughter of former Olympic champion Anett Pötzsch. Rauschenbach/Szolkowy won the German pair nationals in figure skating in 2001. Their coach was Monika Scheibe and they trained in Chemnitz. Claudia Rauschbach has finished her figure skating carrier.
For quite a time he could not find a new partner. So he kept his interest in figure skating alive in participating in Synchronized Skating.
Finally he found a new skating partner in Aljona Sawtschenko, originally from the Ukraine. The pair won instantly the German nationals in 2004. Their coach is former worldchampion Ingo Steuer.
In October 2005 the pair Sawtschenko/Szolkowy won the Nebelhorn-Trophy in Oberstdorf and also the Grand Prix Skate Canada. Aljona Sawtschenko received German citizenship on December 29th 2005. Therefore the pair is able to participate in the Winter Olympics 2006.
